Movies - Double Platinum

Double Platinum is a 1999 telefilm starring Diana Ross
and Brandy Norwood.

The story begins with a scene featuring star singer Claudia Harris (Ross) leaving her daughter Kayla, who was an infant at the time. It is revealed that Kayla was born in Atlanta, Georgia, but in her later years, she would move to St. Louis, Missouri.

Kayla (Norwood) attends a concert featuring Claudia, not knowing at the time that the singer is her mother. When Claudia breaks the news to Kayla, she suddenly shows resentment towards Claudia from the fact that she had been abandoned many years ago. Claudia tries to form a relationship with Kayla, and the young star reluctantly agrees.

As the story progresses, Claudia resides in New York City, with a fancy mansion and a chauffeur. It is there that Kayla decides to become a superstar, just like her mother. Soon, she signs a record deal, and records an album.

However, Kayla continues to harbor bitter feelings towards Claudia. When Claudia steals the spotlight at an awards show, Kayla severely reprimands her. Eventually, her feelings change, and she begins to accept the truth about her mother and the events that took place when she was younger.

Trivia

The songs featured in the movie are actually found on Brandy's hit 1998 album, Never Say Never (including her popular hit song, "Have You Ever?"). It was her second TV movie, following her title role as Cinderella in a remake of the classic fairy tale (with Whitney Houston
as her fairy godmother). Besides Ross and Houston, Brandy also cites Aretha Franklin, Janet Jackson
, Mariah Carey
and Luther Vandross as her influences. Some of the other songs were featured on Ross' 1999 album, Every Day is a New Day, which was released following the release of the movie.
