Farewell My Concubine is a tale of love, friendship, and the turmoils of Chinese history set against the backdrop of Peking opera sub-culture. It talks about the intimate story of two boyhood friends, Chen Dieyi and Duan Xiaolou, who endure brutal apprenticeship to become Peking opera stars of playing female and male roles on stage. Their hardships and tumultuous relationship parallel the changing politics and culture of a China. The film's title is taken from that of one of the Peking Operas performed by the two opera stars. In it, Xiang Yu, a famous warlord, bids farewell to his concubine, Yu Ji, who did her last sword dance before they commit suicide.
