Plot

Prologue

Two years after the events of Final Fantasy VII, the planet has begun healing from the devastating attack from Meteor, while the survivors of Midgar have begun to build a new home on the edge of the ruins: a new city aptly named 'Edge'. However a strange disease known as "Geostigma" has arisen. It is proving to be fatal, and children seem to be at greatest risk.

In the time since Meteor's descent, Cloud Strife has established his own delivery service with the aid of Tifa Lockhart. He has lived with her—along with Barret Wallace and his adopted daughter, Marlene—in the city of Edge for a while in their newly recontructed bar, 7th Heaven, and when Barrett goes away to find new energy resources to replace mako, Marlene is entrusted to their care. With them also is a boy named "Denzel," whom Cloud and Tifa have taken in, and he is one of many suffering from Geostigma's effects. The bar is also now an orphanage for other children infected with the fatal disease. Recently, however, Cloud has secluded himself from the world, for he is also infected with Geostigma, and—secretly wracked with guilt over his inabililty to save the lives of Zack and Aerith—doesn't wish to be a burden on those who he loves.

First Act

Three unknown figures appear outside Edge, searching for their mother, whereupon they waylay the unsuspecting Cloud. The three young men launch an assault, demanding a puzzled Cloud to reveal to them the whereabouts of their mother. After briefly combating him, they allow him to escape.

Cloud is subsequently summoned by Rufus Shinra, the leader of the now defunct Shin-Ra Company, who is now confined to a wheelchair due to Geostigma. Rufus has information on Cloud's unknown assailants, revealing the name of the leader of the trio to be "Kadaj." However, he offers no clues as to why Cloud was attacked by them. After Cloud leaves, Kadaj arrives, subduing Rufus' bodyguards (the Turks known as "Reno" and "Rude"), demanding to know where his mother is. Kadaj reveals that the "mother" he is searching for is in fact the remains of Jenova, that he is somehow connected to the cause of Geostigma, and that his revenge on the world will be accomplished when he has collected all of Jenova's cells, resulting in a new "Reunion."

The three members of Kadaj's gang begin collecting children who are infected with Geostigma. They take them (including Denzel and the uninfected Marlene) to the Forgotten Capital of the Ancients, where they place all the infected children in a subservient trance-like state. Cloud attempts to rescue the children, but fails, being taken to safety by Vincent Valentine.

Vincent suspects that the trio is seeking to obtain the remains of Jenova and that it could result in the return of Sephiroth. He also reveals that Geostigma is the result of one's body functioning excessively to fight off an invasion of Jenova cells. Marlene, having escaped from Kadaj, arrives and wants Cloud to immediately go after Kadaj's gang, accusing Cloud of apathy when he says he wants to consult Rufus first. After some soul-searching, Cloud agrees and they return to Edge, where Kadaj's gang is headed.

Second Act

Shortly thereafter, in the city of Edge, Yazoo and Loz (the other two-thirds of Kadaj's trio) have surrounded a monument which they believe contains Jenova's remains, intending to tear it down. The populace attempt to oppose their actions, though they are quickly quelled after the trio unleash numerous monsters into the square, including Bahamut SIN. The two Turks, with the aid of the other Final Fantasy VII party members (Tifa, Barrett, Red XIII, Cait Sith, Yuffie, Cid, and Vincent) attempt to defuse the situation until Cloud arrives. With the help of his friends, Cloud is able to defeat the monsters, including Bahamut SIN, which he disposes of with the use of his Climhazzard Limit Break.
