Flags of our Fathers is a feature film directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Paul Haggis. It is based on the book of the same name written by James Bradley and Ron Powers and is the 26th feature film that Eastwood has directed since his directorial debut, Play Misty for Me, in 1971. It is due to be released in 2006. It stars Ryan Phillippe, Adam Beach, Jesse Bradford, Jamie Bell, Paul Walker and Barry Pepper. Filming took place in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and in Sandvík, Iceland.

Eastwood will also direct a complementary film on the battle from the Japanese side. It is tentatively titled Red Sun, Black Sand
and will be filmed sometime during 2006 with an entirely Japanese cast. Eastwood intends to release the film sometime after the release of Flags of our Fathers.

Plot outline

The film recounts the ultimately tragic tale of five young U.S. Marines, and one U.S. Navy corpsman photographed raising an American flag atop Mount Suribachi in the midst of the great Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.
