The Gay Mafia (also known as the Velvet Mafia) is a term originally mentioned by Spy magazine in 1995 and became widely known after an interview with Michael Ovitz in Vanity Fair in 2002. Ovitz stated that an organized group was singling him out to ensure that he would "never in again".

Ring leaders of the group were claimed to be DreamWorks SKG co-founder David Geffen, former New York Times reporter Bernard Weintraub, various former employees of Ovitz at the Creative Artists Agency such as CAA co-founder and now Universal Studios President Ron Meyer, and former Disney President Michael Eisner. Then chairman of Vivendi Universal Entertainment Barry Diller was also indirectly linked to the group.

:"I know how hard it is for people to see me as a victim," Ovitz was quoted as saying, "but in this case it's pretty close to the truth."

The concept of a "gay mafia" has spread to popular culture; a Will & Grace episode revolved around such an entity with Elton John (in a cameo) as its boss.
