Movies - Goober and the Ghost Chasers

Goober and the Ghost Chasers was a 1973 Saturday morning cartoon produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. A direct clone of Hanna-Barbera's successful Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, Goober and the Ghost Chasers also features a group of teenagers solving spooky mysteries with their dog, Goober. The major difference was that Goober had the power to disappear when he was scared by ghosts, an advantage Scooby-Doo did not. Some episodes featured "celebrity" guest stars like Wilt Chamberlain and the Kids from the Partridge Family.

Premise

A group of teenagers write for the self-published Ghost Chasers Magazine. However, unlike the Mystery Inc. 'kids', who almost always strive to expose that the monsters that they encounter were frauds and criminals, the Ghost Chasers travel to exotic places around the world searching for actual apparitions to be caught on tape (and sometimes an interview). Unfortunately, almost every ghost they encounter were reluctant to be a part of their mag, for they were either fake or just plain stubborn. Along the way, they meet unnexpected celebrities of the era, often teaming up with the Partridge Family.

Cast of Characters

The Ghost Chasers Staff

  • Goober (Paul Winchell
) - The titular character of the series. He's bluish green dog owned by Gilly who wears a yellow-striped red wool hat. Goober is cowardly and can turn invisible leaving only his collar and hat visible, but he tends to become visible again at the most inoppurtune times. Like the dogs of Clue Club and Monroe from Juniper Lee, his speech can only be understood by a limited group of people (particularly us, the audience, whom he regularly addresses to)
  • Ted (Jerry Dexter
) - The self-appointed leader of the Ghost Chasers. He is portrayed as focused on getting the story (thus there wasn't any indication of character development for him). However, Ted isn't as haughty as Fred from Scooby Doo. Ted is in charge of approving the authenticity of the ghosts they meet, as he always carries gadgets like the geiger counter-like Specter Detector.
  • Tina (Jo Ann Harris
) - Redheaded interviewer for the Ghost Chasers Magazine. Like Ted, not much was shown of her character development, but like everyone else in the staff she's eager to get information from the story (despite some of the ghosts' reluctance).
  • Gilly (Ronnie Schell
) - Bispectacled photographer of the mag and Goober's owner. He's quite oblivious to the fact that ghosts are scary and is willing to photograph any trace of existence regarding them in their trips and often has to be literally dragged away in the face of danger.
The Partridge Kids (Regular Guests)

  • Danny Partridge (Danny Bonaduce
) - Portrayed as witty, but is also afraid of ghosts.
  • Laurie Partridge (Susan Dey
) - Oldest sibling and was meant to be the responsibble one
  • Chris & Tracey Partridge(Brian Forster
    & Suzanne Crough
respectively) - Danny and Laurie's younger siblings who were regularly left out on the Ghost Chaser's searches, but end up helping them by finding hidden secrets from where they are left off.
Encountered Ghosts
  • Dink and Dunk - Twin brother pirates of the ship Sea Witch, with Dunk as the gruff angry captain and Dink as his friendly first mate.
  • Matamoa - the ghost of an ancient Hawaiian king.
  • Osiris - King of the Dead from egyptian mythology.
  • Macbeth Scottish King from the Shakespeare play.
  • Spirit of Overdore
  • A headless cowboy
