Movies - Gremlins

Gremlins is a 1984 movie directed by Joe Dante. It stars Zach Galligan
and Phoebe Cates
. A sequel called Gremlins 2: The New Batch
was released in 1990. Unlike this cartoon-like sequel, the original Gremlins opts for black comedy, which is balanced against a Christmastime setting.

Plot summary

Inventor Randall "Rand" Peltzer (played by Hoyt Axton
) of Kingston Falls goes on a trip to New York City and decides to pick up a present for his son Billy (Galligan). A young Chinese boy (played by John Louie) takes Rand to his grandfather's small shop in Chinatown where Rand takes interest in a small, cute, furry creature called a mogwai (which, in Mandarin Chinese, translates literally as "evil spirit"). Mr. Wing (the Chinese boy's grandfather and owner of the shop who is played by Keye Luke
) refuses to sell the mogwai noting that owning it takes considerable responsibility, but Wing's grandson secretly sells the mogwai to Rand. Though the creature seems innocent enough, the grandson warns Rand that he must take the following precautions regarding the creature: he must not let the Mogwai near bright light (especially sunlight, which can kill the Mogwai), he must not get water on the mogwai, and, most importantly, never feed the mogwai after midnight.

Rand names the creature Gizmo and brings him home to his son. Unfortunately, although his new companion proves to be a very gentle and well behaved creature, Billy and his friends inadvertently become careless with Gizmo. They accidentally spill water on Gizmo, causing him to instantly multiply. Even worse, the new and much more anti-social mogwai (led by Stripe, who has a white mohawk-like hairstyle) that have spawned from Gizmo trick their guardians into feeding them after midnight, and transform into dark green gremlin-like monsters which wreak havoc upon Billy's town. Together with his girlfriend Kate Beringer (Cates), Billy must stop the gremlins before they can cause any more damage. Remarkably for the time and cultural context, the "original" Gizmo is not only non-participant, but even afraid of his evil offspring and helps Billy and Kate fight them.

At the end after the gremlins are eliminated, the old man returns to collect Gizmo to prevent any reoccurance of the trouble. However, while he notes while the Peltzers and western society as a whole is not ready to properly care for a mogwai, Billy shows some potential.

Trivia

  • The warped ragtime method of Gremlin singing was named the Gremlin Rag by Warner Bros. when it was named on the credits, with some soundtrack versions including Gizmo's song as an intro.
  • The original script was much darker and would have definitely received an "R" Rating. Scenes cut were that of Lynn Peltzer dying in her struggle with the Gremlins, and her head rolling down the stairs when Billy arrives. Also, Gizmo was supposed to turn into Stripe, which would have confused audiences.
  • Phoebe Cates' character is revealed to hate Christmas. Her character's father attempted to come down the family chimney dressed as Santa Claus, broke his neck falling, and died on Christmas. A famous urban legend is based on this part of the story.
  • An early version of the script included a scene where the aftermath of a McDonald's was revealed with all the patrons, furniture, and whatnot eaten, but the hamburgers were untouched. This was removed quite early in the revision process due to McDonald's obvious displeasure with the idea.
  • The film's script went through 8 drafts before a shooting script was finalized.
  • When the Gremlins watch Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
    a Hidden Mickey
    appears in the foreground.
  • This was one of two movies in 1984 to influence the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating, the other being Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
    . Both were rated PG.
  • When Billy hurries through Kingston Falls to get to work he passes a cinema. The films that are showing are A Boys Life and Watch The Skies both were working titles for Spielberg films, the first one for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
and the second for Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    .
  • Executive-Producer Steven Spielberg has a cameo, he's passing by Rand Peltzer in some sort of wheelchair at the inventors convention.
  • When Rand Peltzer is calling from the inventors convention you can clearly see the Time Machine prop from the movie The Time Machine
, then the image passes over to Lynn Peltzer, when it comes back to the convention the Machine is gone, leaving some bewildered people and smoke. Also visible in the background is Robby the Robot, "star" of the classic science fiction film Forbidden Planet
    .
  • Zach Galligan, who plays Billy, had a crush on Phoebe Cates, who played Kate.
  • The retail store scene at the end of the movie was filmed at a former Montgomery Ward store.
  • The aimed-at-children novelization of the film offered an origin for Mogwais and Gremlins as a prologue to the events of the film. Supposedly, Mogwais were created as gentle, contemplative creatures by a scientist on an alien world; however, it was discovered that their physiology was unstable, and under "certain circumstances" (alluding to the three Mogwai rules that were given in the film), Mogwais would change into creatures that the somewhat sanitized novel referred to as "mischievous". This origin is unique to the novel; no definitive origin for Mogwai/Gremlins was ever given in either Gremlins film.
