| Haim Gouri (b. 1923) is an Israeli poet, novelist, journalist, and documentary filmmaker born in Tel Aviv and currently living in Jerusalem. Following time in Europe where he helped Jews emigrate to Palestine following World War II, he fought in the 1948 Israeli War of Independence. The impact of these events on Gouri is evident in his writing. He has been called "Israel's Poet." He was awarded the Bialik Prize for Literature in 1975 and the Israel Prize for Poetry in 1988. The film The 81st Blow, which he wrote, co-produced, and co-directed, was nominated for the 1974 Academy Award for Documentary Feature. His famous poem Imo ("his Mother") is a moving call for compassion and empathy for Israel's defeated enemies. On the other hand, Gouri was also one of those who called for "The Complete Land of Israel" to be incorporated into the state. Selected worksPoetry
