Hedgehog in the Fog (, Yozhik v tumane) is a 1975 Soviet animated film directed by Yuri Norstein, produced by the Soyuzmultfilm studio in Moscow. The script (in Russian) was written by Sergei Grigoryevich Kozlov, who also published a book under the same name.

Plot

This is a story about a little hedgehog (voice of Mariya Vinogradova) and his friend bear cub (voice of Vyacheslav Nevinny). They would meet every evening to drink tea with raspberry jam, to gaze at the sky and to count the stars. But one time, while passing through the woods on the way to his friend, the hedgehog got lost in the thick fog.

He finds himself in a strange world inhabited by some frightening creatures (eagle-owl and the bat) but also helpful and kind ones (the dog, the horse); that world of silence and rustles, of darkness, high grass and attracting enchanting stars. All things around him are as if in a dream. The characters of Hedgehog and Bear cub are very sensitive, kind and romantic. In contrast, the eagle-owl is a pragmatic, who is incapable of feeling the beauty of the surrounding world.

Quoting a description from the database of the Soviet/Russian animated films: This film is impossible to tell, like music, like nature, like Beauty... . It was awarded the first prize for the best animated film at the All-Union Film Festival in Frunze 1976, also at the Children's and Youth Film Festival in Teheran the same year. In 2003 it was awarded the title of the best animated film of all times at the Laputa Animation Festival in Tokyo.
