Movies - Helena Cain

Helena Cain was the commanding officer of the Battlestar
Pegasus
in the reimagined science fiction television series Battlestar Galactica
.
Admiral Cain
, played by actress Michelle Forbes
, is an attractive woman in the prime of life, albeit an authoritarian, bloodthirsty, borderline-psychotic woman — it is rumored that she shot her own executive officer in cold blood when he questioned one of her orders, and ordered murders of uncooperative civilians. While Commander Adama led Galactica in a flight away from the Twelve Colonies when he realized that the Cylons were victorious, Admiral Cain led Pegasus on a campaign of hit-and-run attacks against the Cylon fleet for six months until it accidentally encountered the civilian fleet led by Galactica.

Cain came across 15 refugee civilian ships a week after the attack, but rather than protecting them like Galactica did, she stripped these civilian vessels of any useful parts and supplies, drafted any civilians who had valuable technical experience into her crew, and then left the remaining civilians for dead aboard their ships. If the civilians refused to join the Pegasus crew, Cain ordered for their families to be shot—overall, two families were killed under her orders until the draftees relented.

Admiral Cain is later shot to death by the Cylon agent Gina
(who was imprisoned aboard Pegasus) at the end of the episode "Resurrection Ship Pt. 2." Cain's executive officer, Colonel Jack Fisk
, takes command of Pegasus, while Adama is promoted to Admiral and takes command of the fleet.

Trivia

  • The role of Admiral Cain was offered to Jane Seymour
    (who played Serina
, a reporter in the original series) but she turned down the offer.
  • Admiral Cain's first name was widely reported to be "Nelena" for a considerable period of time around the release of the episode, "Pegasus", in which she first appeared. Neither "Nelena" nor "Helena" are spoken in dialogue during the episode, but Sci Fi Channel press releases and other official sources consistently use "Helena". Helena is a Greek female name, first attested in the Iliad.
