| I Capture the Castle was the first novel written by Dodie Smith, published in 1948. The plot centers on 17-year-old Cassandra Mortmain and her family, struggling to live in a decaying English castle in the 1930s. It was adapted into a film directed by Tim Fywell in 2003. Plot Summary: Cassandra's father acquires writer's block after a very strange and comical cake knife incident. Her family is very poor, but that all changes when she meets the Cottons. Her sister, Rose, takes a particular interest in Simon Cotton. Throughout the story, Cassandra is trying to improve her writing by 'capturing the castle.'
