Ice Age: The Meltdown is a 2006 related to to the 2002 computer-animated film Ice Age
. It is being produced by Blue Sky Studios for 20th Century Fox, and is scheduled to be released in theatres on March 31, 2006. It is directed by Carlos Saldanha, co-director of the original Ice Age. This is not considered a sequel.

Just as in the original, prehistoric animals are the focus of the story. Returning in their original roles are:

Plot

The ice age critters are having a ball in their new world full of tar pits and geysers. However, a flood is coming and the only thing that keeps the flood from destroying the valley are the melting glaciers. But as soon as a vulture tells them an ark can lead them to safety, the animals are off in a flash.

Meanwhile, Manny is depressed that he is the last mammoth alive. While Diego tries to help Manny get over it, Sid taunts him. However, while Manny is alone, Diego and Sid follow two annoying possums who lead them to a female mammoth, Ellie. Manny shows up when they make this discovery. The only problem is that she thinks she is a possum. Manny tries to tell Ellie she is a mammoth, because he wants her to help him start his new family.

Along the way, they find out Diego is afraid of water; Cretaceous and Maelstrom, two dangerous sea reptiles from the Mesozoic, plan to eat the critters in the meltdown; Scrat tries to stop the meltdown; and everybody learns that surviving together is an option, but surviving the meltdown is a must!

Trivia

The working title for this movie was Ice Age 2: The Meltdown. For the movie's final release, they decided to remove the number 2, calling it Ice Age: The Meltdown, as the creators considered the movie not a sequel but an entirely new movie.

Promotions

As an additional marketing ploy a special "anti-cell" spot was created with Sid complaining to the audience about a ringing cellular phone. The same was done for Brother Bear
and I, Robot
.

On Family Guy's episode Sibling Rivalry, In one scene, Scrat is shown trying to take 3 "nuts" out of a side of a glacier, in which Peter shows up and tries to stop him. Apart from Peter, the scene was done in 3D, and Scrat was voiced by Chris Wedge
who voices him in the films. The episode originally aired the week before the film opened. Fox aired promotions for the movie throughout the evening.
