The 1990 miniseries IT stars Tim Curry, Richard Thomas, John Ritter, Annette O'Toole, Harry Anderson, Dennis Christopher, Richard Masur, and Tim Reid. It was based on the novel It by Stephen King. The younger actors playing the flashback versions of the older characters were Jonathan Brandis, Seth Green, Emily Perkins, Brandon Crane, Marlon Taylor, Ben Heller and Adam Faraizl.StorylineIT aired as a two-party television minseries on November 18, 1990, and loosely follows the King novel. The first half of the film introduces the 1958 group of social outcastes or "Losers", as they met and form a tight knit in the face of a cruel and intolerant world. They each individually face the crazy "IT" clown and make some half-hearted attempt to stop it, and locate its home in the sewers, only to fail. The second half of the film, focuses on the now grown up gang of "Losers" who relutently agree to return home (as most of them have left their quaint hometown) to locate and destroy the "IT" once and for all. Novel vs. MiniseriesThe television miniseries was done on a fairly modest budget, and thus events in the book had to be ignored, especially if they would have required expensive special effects. Yet, the director was unhappy with the final result of the insect-like "IT" monster. Another aspect of the television miniseries that is different from the novel is the treatment of sexuality. In the novel, after the young "Losers Escape" escape from the sewer, Beverley Marsh has sex with the boys. This and the novel's exposition of on a gay bar in town and a gay-bashing scene also do not make it into the film. On the DVD's audio commentary the director stats that he did not want to get into these sexuality issues. Some of the major characters backstories are either ignored or changed. In the novel, Eddie Kaspbrak eventually tells his friends that he married a neurotic woman similar to his mother, but in the television miniseries he tells his friends that he is still a virgin, and their was a possible unstated homoerotic undertone to his character as well. It is a man-eating clown that turns into a spider.
