Movies - Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (Who Pays the Piper in English. A more literal translation would be Let it be, buddies.) is a 1983 Indian film directed by Kundan Shah and produced by NFDC. The film had a budget of only 7 lakh rupees (Rs 700,000) is one of the most famous cult movies in Hindi. Receiving little commercial success on release, it went on to be a cult classic and is consistently rated as the best Hindi language movie on IMDB. The movie is a dark satirical comedy about the rampant corruption in the Indian political system. The film stars Naseeruddin Shah
, Ravi Vasvani, Satish Shah
, Pankaj Kapoor
, Bhakti Barve and Om Puri
. The most amazing feat of the movie is its ability to seamlessly merge slapstick with political commentary and satire. Some of the scenes, such as the Mahabharata scene on stage and the mixed telephone calls scene remain some of the funniest sequences ever captured on film. The movie has a dark ending that takes a pessimistic view of the corrupt politician-industrialist-journalist nexus.

Trivia

The names of the two lead characters played by Naseeruddin Shah
and Ravi Vaswani respectively are references to the names of the production controller, Vidhu Vinod Chopra
, and the assistant director, Sudhir Mishra
, both of whom went on to become well-known Hindi movie directors. All three of Chopra, Mishra, and Kundan Shah (The director) had trained in FTII (Film and Television Institute of India).

The character of Dushasana in the celebrated Mahabharata scene is a cameo by Vidhu Vinod Chopra
.

This Movie was made on such a shoestring budget that Naseeruddin Shah
, the most well known actor was paid only Rs 15,000 ($300 at 2003 exchange rates) for the movie.

There is a reference by one of the lead characters early in the movie saying that they have borrowed money from Kundan Shah. Kundan Shah is the name of the director.

Bhakti Bharve played Shobha, a zealous editor of a whistle-blower magazine named Khabardar. It is widely believed that this character was modeled after the Indian author and columnist Shobhaa Dé. Anita Kanwar dubbed for the character played by Bhakti Bharve.

The main plot of this movie was modelled after the Anglo Italian movie "Blow-up", featuring David Hemmings and Vanessa Redgrave and was made by the maverick director Michelangelo Antonioni. Hence the directors aptly named the park in which the city's mayor was murdered as "Antonioni Park"
