This is a film made by Satyajit Ray, based on the novel of same name by Mani Shankar Mukherjee.

Plot

The film porteays the hopelessnes of a young middle-class educated man,Somnath(Pradip Mukherjee) in the society infested with corruption.Somnath,with many a failures to get hold of a job,finds out a job of middle-man,an order supplier paid commission.

Somnath soon finds himself involved in petty deal sbur he is ambitious. Meanwhile,Sukumar,his friend,going through similar ordeals,ends up being a taxi-driver.

There is a big chance for Somnath for getting a big order. However,the client is reluctant.An acquaintance, Mr. Mitter, advises him to supply the client with a prostitute. After much hesitation, he agrees.Somnath,after trying several brothels,he finds out a girl. However,the girl turns out to be Sukumar's sister.At a loss, Sukumar tells the girl to take her remuneration and leave. The girl tells that she is there to earn money,not to beg. Somnath delivers the girl to his client.

Somnath gets the contract. But he is not a happy man. He also sacrifices his conscince to the on-going web of corruption.
