Storyline

The story returns to the Brody family in Amity Island
. Martin Brody has since died of a heart attack, although his wife, Ellen (Gary), claims that "it was the fear that killed him." Sean (Anderson), the youngest son, works as a police deputy in Amity. In the film's opening scene, while on an assignment to clear a log from a buoy, he is attacked and killed by a shark during the Christmas season in a graphic scene, his screams as he is attacked are unheard over the surf and carolers on the island.

Ellen is convinced that the shark had deliberately targetted Sean and visits her eldest son, Michael (Guest), in the Bahamas. He now works as a marine biologist and, fearing he will be attacked next, she hopes to convince him to take up a new job on dry land. She meets Hoagie (Caine), and they begin dating. After a series of nightmares and shark attacks, including one upon her granddaughter (Barsi), Ellen becomes convinced that the shark has tracked her family to the Bahamas. She takes a boat out to sea on her own, intent on confronting the shark.

The novelisation of the film (by Hank Searls) suggests that the shark may be acting under the influence of a vengeful voodoo witch doctor (who has a feud with the Brody family), and the shark's apparent revenge has magical implications, ergo the witch doctor is the 'revenge' and the shark is his tool.

Facts

  • Lorraine Gary later said she regretted reprising her role as Ellen Brody and wished that this film had never been made. The movie was widely ridiculed at the time for the scene at the end that showed the shark "roaring". The films also contains many mistakes. For example, there is one scene where Michael Caine's character jumps into the ocean from a crashing helicopter and swims onto Ellen's boat. When he comes aboard, his shirt is as dry as if freshly ironed.
  • The film's tagline "This Time It's Personal" has become a popular catch phrase despite the film's lack of critical and financial success. It is most often used comedically either to refer to revenge where strong emotions are involved (i.e. "Yankees vs. Red Sox - This Time It's Personal"), or to mock extraneous film sequels created purely to cash in on the success of the original (i.e. "Bridget Jones Diary - This Time It's Personal.")
  • The film has benefitted from what is known as the "so bad, it's good" phenomenon, where many people will watch the film casually just to laugh at it. It appears often on different television stations and has had modest DVD success.
  • It was nominated for Worst Picture in the 1987 Golden Raspberry Awards.

Trivia

  • At the very beginning of the film, Quint's boat, "The Orca" (from the first Jaws film), can be seen in the background.
  • Murray Hamilton was asked to reprise his role as the mayor in a short appearance only at the beginning of the film, but died of cancer before filming started.
  • According to this film, the events that occurred in Jaws 3-D
    (1983) never took place.
  • 'Michael Caine' won an Oscar award for Hannah and Her Sisters
(1986) which he could not collect because he was to busy filming this movie, he regretted this soon after.
  • Mario Van Peebles wrote his own part for the movie.
  • Some boat (actor close-up) scenes where filmed at Falls Lake, at Universal City Studios, California. near the Psycho house on the backlot.
  • When Michael Caine was asked about this movie in an interview, he answered, "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific."
  • There was a crucial subplot involving Michael Caine's character that involved the smuggling drugs onto the island which is actually fully detailed in the film's novelization were actually shot and then deleted during post-production because it took away from the film's main premise involving the shark.
