Johann Mouse is a one-reel animated cartoon short subject in the Tom and Jerry series, produced in Technicolor and released to theatres on March 21 1953 by Metro-Goldwyn Mayer. It was produced by Fred Quimby and directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, with musical supervision by Scott Bradley and narration by Hans Conried. Placing the popular cat and mouse characters in Vienna, which was the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The cartoon is inspired by the work of Viennese composer Johann Strauss II, the cartoon won the 1953 Academy Award for Best Short Subject: Cartoons.PlotIn the walls of the house of Johann Strauss lived Johann Mouse (portrayed by Jerry). Little Johann loved Strauss' piano waltzes, and whenever the musician would play, the mouse would find himself hypnotized by the music and begin to dance. And whenever the mouse would dance, Strauss' housecat (Tom) would try to catch him, and always fail. One day, when Strauss went away on a trip, the cat panicked, wondering how he could lure the mouse out of his hole without Strauss' piano playing. The cat therefore learned to play the piano himself, so that the mouse would wander out of the hole and give the cat a chance to catch him. Once the cat stopped playing and started chasing the mouse, however, the mouse scrambled back into his mousehole before the cat could catch him. The cat therefore continued to play the piano and attempt to catch the mouse day after day. One day, the house servants observe the piano-playing cat and the dancing mouse. The news quickly spread around Vienna, culminating with the pair being summoned to perform at the palace of the emperor. Johann Mouse and the cat performed their act for the royal audience, but, just as always, the cat attempted to chase the mouse when he was done playing, and, as always, failed to do so.
