Just Friends is a movie about an overweight high school student (Ryan Reynolds) who is in love with his best friend (Amy Smart), but she doesn't feel the same way. Later in life he becomes very successful and very attractive (he loses all his extra weight). When a tour with a very popular singer (Anna Faris in a semi-transparent reference to Britney Spears, Ashlee Simpson, and many other seemingly "dizzy" female pop stars) brings him home for Christmas, he has one chance to prove his love to "the girl he never forgot." There is some controversy over the film due to the perceived shallow message of the film.

The movie includes memorable roles by Chris Klein in an unusual character of a ruthless, evil womanizer, Chris Marquette as Chris Brander's younger brother, and Stephen Root. In fact, this is the second film that Reynolds has made with Faris, the first being Waiting.

Samantha James

Samantha James, a so called, "Pop Star" is a highlight of the movie Just Friends. She sings a number of silly tunes, and is on the verge of being sent to a psychward. On a flight to Paris, she sets a microwave on fire by putting a frozen (TV) dinner in it with the tin-foil wraper still on, and then, when the plane takes an emergency landing, she believes she is being Punked by Ashton Kutcher. She is given a tazer gun in the movie as protection from stalkers, and when she walks into a bar/restaurant with her boyfriend Chris Brander, says that people are staring at her because she is so famous, but very clearly, no one is looking at her. She hisses at Jamie Palamino, Chris Branders old pal from school, and gets zapped by her own tazer gun in a crowded mall by Chris' younger brother. Later on, she is in a dazed state, eating toothpaste and claiming that she is a bubble. Anna Faris plays Samantha James.
