Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek (カクレンボ), meaning Hide and Seek in Japanese, is a chilling short 25 minute animated computer-generated imagery film that is based around an innocent children's game. "Otokoyo", as they call it, is a game of hide and seek, played near the ruins of an old city which no one inhabits. Whenever the children play this game, one by one, they go missing, and it is said demons and ghosts are the cause for their disappearances. One night, a boy named Hikora must play this game and enter the forbidden territory of "Otokoyo" in hopes of finding his missing sister.

Of note is that this movie uses CGI animation and cel-shading to achieve the look of a traditional animated movie. The result is a movie which bears the appearance of traditional animation, but is as smoothly animated as most CGI movies.

Characters

Hikora (ヒコラ)- The young boy who plays the game to find his missing sister.
Sorincha (ソリンチャ)- A quiet member of the group. Is she Hikora's sister?
Yaimao (ヤイマオ)- Hikora's best friend who plays the game to lend a hand in finding Sorincha.
Noshiga (ノシガ)- The leader of his little gang who says he isn't afraid of demons, but that truth is made apparent the moment they begin playing.
Tachiji (タチジ)- One of the members in Noshiga's gang.
Suku (スク)- Another member of Noshiga's gang.
Inmu (インム)- Twin brother to Yanku. His reason for playing is a mystery.
Yanku (ヤンク)- Twin brother to Inmu. His reason for playing is a mystery.

Demons

Once the eight children pass through the gates to enter the abandoned street, they are pursued by four different demons and then finally by the one who is "it".

Kimotori (肝取り) - The liver taker
Chitori　(血取り) - The blood taker
Aburatori　(油取り) - The oil taker
Kotori (子取り) - The child taker
Oni (鬼) - The demon, or ogre.

It's important for the understanding of the film that when children play Hide and Seek in Japan, the person who is "it" is also referred to as being the ogre, or Oni.

Awards and nominations

Kakurenbo premiered in March at the Tokyo International Anime Fair, where it won the award for Notable Entry in the General Category. In Korea, it received a Best Film Nomination at the Seoul Comics and Animation Festival. It then went on to win Best Short film at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal
