Movies - Kal Ho Naa Ho

Kal Ho Naa Ho (Hindi कल हो ना हो) is a 2003 Bollywood
film set in New York City. It stars Shahrukh Khan
, Preity Zinta
, and Saif Ali Khan
. The movie was directed by first-timer Nikhil Advani; it was produced and co-written by Karan Johar, better known as the director of the hit films Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.

This movie resembles Dil Chahta Hai
, blending Bollywood and Hollywood movie conventions with high production values. While copyright violation has long run rampant in the Bollywood film industry, this movie is notable for having licensed the rights to Roy Orbison's Oh, Pretty Woman for an extended musical sequence taking place in the streets in New York.

Because of its familiar setting and music, accessiblilty to non-Indians, good production values, and respect for copyright, Kal Ho Naa Ho has been used to introduce Bollywood to markets where Indian films have been rare.

Synopsis

The movie stars Shahrukh Khan
as Aman Mathur, a guardian-angel character to various New Yorkers. He finds himself involved in a romantic triangle with Naina (Preity Zinta
) and Rohit (Saif Ali Khan
).

Jennifer Kapur's husband commits suicide; her mother-in-law (Lajjo Kapur) blames her for the death. Lajjo is also determined to marry off Jennifer's daughter Naina (Preity Zinta
) -- over her mother's objections, if necessary. Everyone in the family is at odds with each other.

Aman moves into their neighbourhood and changes their life: he manages to cheer them up, tries to arrange a match between Naina and her best friend Rohit (Saif Ali Khan
), and helps Jennifer with her restaurant.

Naina however, does not want to marry Rohit; she is in love with Aman. Aman, sensing her affection, makes a point of telling her that he's already married. Naina turns to Rohit for comfort and ends by accepting his marriage proposal.

But Aman is not married and he is in love with Naina. Why is he refusing the love that he so desires? The film ends with the revelation of the true reason for his noble self-sacrifice.
