| Karl C. Agathon is a fictional character in Battlestar Galactica. His aviator call sign is Helo. Agathon is an ECO (Electronic Countermeasures Officer) on the Colonial Raptors and was paired with Sharon Valerii. During the Cylons' surprise attack on the Twelve Colonies, their Raptor was damaged and forced to land on Caprica. While making repairs, they were mobbed by a group of survivors desperate to get off the planet. A lottery was used to decide who could escape on the Raptor. After discovering Dr. Gaius Baltar was amongst the survivors, Agathon gave up his seat to him. (Originally, Helo's story was to end here; he was presumed dead in the Cylon attack on Caprica. However, the character proved so popular with fans that he was 'resurrected' for the series.) After the Raptor left, Agathon fled into the wilderness and tried to elude Cylon forces, surviving by using anti-radiation injections and the other contents of his survival kit. Eventually, he was captured by one of the many copies of Number Six, but was rescued by Sharon (herself a Cylon copy). What followed was an experiment by the Cylons to see if it were possible for a human and a Cylon/human to breed. Helo was placed into situations while journeying towards a military base in Delphi, that would result in affection towards Sharon, ultimately growing into love. The test was a success when Valerii became pregnant after having sex with Agathon. The experiment had an unforseen side effect, as Boomer herself had fallen in love with him for real. Unfortunately, Karl soon discovered the truth after spotting another Sharon Cylon while trying to infiltrate the Delphi military base. Believing that he was being led into a trap, he ran from the base and Sharon. She eventually caught up to him and revealed that she was pregnant. Despite wounding her in the arm, Agathon realized he couldn't bring himself to kill her and instead took her with him to the Delphi museum (at her urging). It was there that he was reunited with Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, who was on a special mission from President Laura Roslin to recover the Arrow of Apollo. After nearly being killed by Kara, Sharon stole her Cylon Raider and flew off. Helo and Starbuck made their way first to Thrace's old apartment to retrieve a new mode of transportation (an old army truck she owns), and then into the woods in search of another military base. While stopping to get their bearings, they ran into a group of Pyramid players-turned resistance fighters. After Kara was wounded and captured by the Cylons and held in a hospital, Agathon and the others tracked her down and attempted to rescue her. They were, surprisingly, aided by Sharon in a stolen Heavy Raider. With the Arrow of Apollo in hand, they left Caprica and made their way to Kobol. Upon arriving at the Astral Queen, Agathon was forced to pull his gun on Lee Adama, in order to stop him from shooting Valerii, whom Apollo blamed for his father nearly being killed. Later, while searching for the Tomb of Athena on the surface of Kobol, Karl admitted to Sharon he still loved and trusted her. After finding the Tomb of Athena, Agathon returned with the group to Galactica, almost three months after being presumed MIA. After the appearance of the Battlestar Pegasus, Agathon's conduct left him facing a death sentence. Agathon and Chief Petty Officer Galen Tyrol intervened to stop the attempted rape of the pregnant Boomer by Lieutenant Thorne, Pegasus's "cylon interrogator", and killed Thorne accidentally in the melee. Cain's summary trial and death sentence of Agathon and Tyrol brought the Galactica to confrontation with Pegasus crews. Although the death sentence was not carried out, Agathon and Tyrol remained in the brig; they were eventually released by Colonel Jack Fisk and presumably all charges were dropped.
