Movies - Lakshya

Lakshya is Hindi for "aim" or "objective". It can mean:-

Lakshya is an Indian cruise missile which is under development. ----

Lakshya (2004) is the second movie directed by Farhan Akhtar
. It stars Hrithik Roshan
and Preity Zinta
. Roshan plays the role of Lieutenant (later Captain) Karan Shergill, who leads his team to victory over the infiltrators on the border.

Story line

Karan Shergil (Roshan) is a young man who has no actual goal in mind or plans for his future. His father is a businessman; his brother is successful in America, but he is drifting. His girlfriend, Romi (Zinta), a student activist, tells him he needs a goal in life. When a friend announces he is going to join the Army, Karan applies for the Indian Military Academy and is enrolled in the Indian Military Academy despite dissent from his parents.

Karan's first days at the IMA are a disaster. Because he is undisciplined, he is constantly punished for inattention. He leaves the academy without permission, sneaking over the wall at Last Post. However, the girl he has been pursuing, Romi, breaks off their relationship because he quit. Karan returns to the IMA, takes his punishment, and becomes a focused, disciplined cadet leader, graduating as a cadet officer. However, his father is too busy to attend his passing out parade.

Lt. Karan is posted to the 3 Punjab Battalion, commanded by Col. Sunil Damle (played by Amitabh Bachchan
), and becomes a respected officer. The regiment is posted to the Kargil sector of Kashmir during the heights of infiltration from across the border. From an immature teenager to a mature officer, he now gets to know the essence of his life or his goal - 'Lakshya'. His journey towards his goal takes him along a path filled with dangers, challenges and difficulty with many lives at stake. Karan encounters Romi, who is a war correspondent, and their feelings for each other become apparent.

Although 3 Punjab is successful in its initial attacks, the regiment is stalled. Karan's best friend, Akbar, is killed in a night assault. His company commander, wounded, is shot dead by a Pakistani. Colonel Damle is told by his Brigadier that 3 Punjab has 48 hours to achieve its goal, or it will be relieved. Karan is assigned to a team which will attempt to climb a tall cliff (mentioned at 800 feet at one point, 1000 feet in another) to flank the Pakistani sangars and regain the hill. On the night before the attack, Karan calls his father and the two are reconciled. On the movement to the hill, the team is ambushed by Pakistani irregulars, leaving Karan in command of six soldiers. There is a discussion among the three remaining officers of whether they should continue; Karan announces he will go on alone if need be. The other five catch up with him. Meanwhile, at the command post, Colonel Damle and the Subedar Major continually try to contact the team by radio, not knowing that their set was smashed in the skirmish.

The six climb the cliff and, in the middle of the night, attack the sangar. Karan, wounded in the heel, is one of the three survivors. However, he recalls the words of the Subedar Major (played by Om Puri
): "Remember, they always come back." When the Pakistanis reinfiltrate, Karan and his jawans kill them. Karan then limps to the top of the mountain, unpacking the Indian tricolor Akbar wanted to carry, and plants it on top of the hill, then fires a flare, to the relieved joy of Colonel Damle.
