Movies - Le Dîner de cons

Le dîner de cons (French: The idiots' dinner) is a French film directed by Francis Veber
that was released in 1998
. Its international English title is The Dinner Game.

Plot

The Dinner Game is a film for introspection under the guise of a comedy. The movie asks the question: "Is being nice idiotic?"

Pierre Brochant, a famous Parisian editor, organises a weekly "idiots' dinner", where each guest must bring along an "idiot" whom the other invitees can take the mickey out of. At the end of the dinner the evening's champion idiot is selected. One guest comes with a brilliant idiot: François Pignon, who is crazy for building with matchsticks. But things start to go haywire when Pierre's wife leaves him in the middle of things.

Additional

The suave, cultured Pierre injures his back and instead of going to the dinner to make a fool of the innocent François Pignon - he has to ask François to help him. Soon Pierre's life disintegrates as the extremely helful François accidently destroys his marriage, by inviting Pierre's ex-mistress; his finances, by bringing in a fellow tax collector - who is responsible for assessing Pierre for the stringent French wealth tax; and a book deal as he gets François to pretend to be a film producer and François starts getting inot the part and starts haggling; and in the end Pierre's sanity.

A good knock about laugh.

Incidently the name François Pignon is used by scriptwriter/director Francis Veber in a number of different of films for example - the Closet, the Valet - in each case the character is completely different.
