| Commander Lee "Apollo" Adama is a fictional character in the television series Battlestar Galactica. He is portrayed by actor Jamie Bamber. In the 2003 miniseries, Adama (then a Captain) was a special guest at the decommissioning ceremonies for Battlestar Galactica Lee Adama was a reserve officer at the time of the attacks and planned to resign his commission to open a bar, however the cylon attacks changed his plans. After Captain Jackson "Ripper" Spencer, CAG (Commander Air Group) of Galactica's Colonial Vipers was killed in battle during the initial attack on the Twelve Colonies, Adama joined the Galactica crew and became its CAG. As a result of a miscalculation by the previous commander of Battlestar Pegasus and his subsequent death, command fell to Adama. His outstanding leadership under enemy fire secured his promotion from Major to Commander and his position as commanding officer of Pegasus. Previously the same week he had been promoted from Captain to Major, he skipped the rank of Colonol, a good week for Adama. Lee has a strained relationship with his father, Admiral Adama, whom he blames for the death of his brother Zak. This strained relationship with his father caused him to become a strong supporter of Colonial President Laura Roslin, who is often butting heads with the Admiral. During the first season, President Laura Roslin would refer to Lee as "Captain Apollo." Lee once corrected her, stating that "Apollo" was his call-sign, but President Roslin replied "But it has a nice ring to it." During the second season, the Battlestar Pegasus joins the fleet. Subsequent deaths and power struggles among the Pegasus leadership, as well as his successful commanding of the ship while during a Cylon surprise attack, sees Lee Adama quickly promoted from Major to Commander and in command of the Pegasus. The fleet discovers a somewhat habitable planet inside of a Nebula, presumably safe from Cylon discovery. This swings the vote to Gaius Baltar during the presidential election, who vows to colonize the planet, "New Caprica". With 39,000 Colonials migrating to New Caprica, Pegasus and Galactica are marginalized and operate with skeleton crews. 380 days after the fleet jumps to New Caprica, the Cylons discover the Colonials' new home. Commander Adama presses Admiral Adama to leave the planet, given that neither ship was currently Combat Ready. The two Battlestars and all space-bound civilian ships jump away from New Caprica.
