| Like Water for Chocolate (Spanish: "Como agua para chocolate") is a popular novel, published in 1989 by first-time Mexican novelist Laura Esquivel. A film based on the book was released in 1993, which earned all 11 Ariel awards of the Mexican Academy of Motion Pictures and became the largest grossing foreign film ever released in the United States. The novel follows the story of a young girl who's birthright to her family was to remain single and see the love of her life marry her sister, and take care of her verbal, abusive mother who saw her as a curse. The novel was originally published in Spanish as Como agua para chocolate, and has been translated into thirty languages; there are over three million copies in print worldwide. This movie is an example of Latin American Magical Realism.
