Although conventional wisdom is that movie sequels are generally inferior to the originals, there are some notable exceptions to this rule. The Internet Movie Database’s (IMDb) ranking is based on the votes of a large number of registered users, and gives a reasonably good reflection of movie goers' response to individual films. The following list shows sequels that have done better than the original movies on this ranking, listed by discrepancy in ranking between the two movies. It should be noted that voting is continuous, so ratings could change at any moment. The list was correct as of February 7, 2006. "Sequels" have for the purpose of this list been defined so as neither to include planned multi-part works such as The Lord of the Rings
trilogy or Kieslowski’s Trois couleurs
, nor series like the James Bond movies.

(*) The two movies have the same rating, but the sequel is ranked higher in the IMDb Top 250.
