| Lucius Malfoy is a fictional character in the Harry Potter novels by J. K. Rowling. Lucius Malfoy is married to Narcissa Black, cousin of Sirius Black and they have a son named Draco Malfoy. Lucius Malfoy was 41 at the time of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, placing his birth at 1954. His father was called Abraxas Malfoy and died of complications resulting from an infection with dragon pox.
Through giving money to charitable causes and the Ministry of Magic, Lucius has become very well connected and frequently uses his influence to further his own ends. At one time, Lucius Malfoy was a governor of Hogwarts. In the movie, Malfoy is played by Jason Isaacs. Forbes magazine states that Lucius Malfoy is currently number 15 on their fictional wealthiest characters list. Name OriginsThe name Lucius, being one of the most common Roman names (meaning 'light'), is an apparent reference to Lucifer ('the brilliant' 'the one that shines'), one of the names for Satan. Some less obvious allusions may come from the Roman Dictator Lucius Sulla, who extrajudiciously executed his rivals. His name could also be a reference to the Roman Emperor Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, also known as Nero. Malfoy is derived from the French mal foi or mal foy, meaning evil and faith respectively. His name could have also been inspired in Saint Lucius (Lucius of Britain, mythical king of the Britons whose death caused his subjects to rebel against Rome, causing what is still known as the Interregnum of Severus.LoyaltyHe was a follower of Lord Voldemort, but left his master after Voldemort was defeated by one-year-old Harry Potter. Malfoy claimed that he had been bewitched by Voldemort and had not meant to serve him. Though this explanation was accepted by the Ministry of Magic, some, such as Arthur Weasley, believed it was a lie.Role in the BooksBefore his son's, and Harry's, second year, he brewed an elaborate plan which consisted of planting the old school diary of Tom Riddle (Lord Voldemort's real name) on Ginny Weasley, knowing full well that it would reopen the Chamber of Secrets and lead to attacks on muggle borns. What he didn't know was that the diary wasn't just a cleverly enchanted diary as Voldemort told him, but a horcrux that contained a part of his master's soul. Malfoy's intended target was not the muggle borns or even Ginny, but to discredit Arthur Weasley and thus sabotage the Muggle Protection Act that Weasley had recently proposed. Lucius' selfishness risked the endangerment of the diary.Malfoy's plan was initially a success (even with the intervention of Malfoy's house-elf, Dobby, who snuck out of the house to warn Harry of the impending terrible events). Students, animals and ghosts were systematically petrified by a Basilisk controlled by Voldemort using Ginny, whose possession became gradually stronger. With pressure from Malfoy (in the form of their families being attacked if they were not to do this), the school governors voted to dismiss Albus Dumbledore as inadequate for running the school. The plan failed, however, when Riddle decided to pursue his own goals, and rather than continue to petrify the non-purebloods of the school he set his eyes on the destruction of Harry Potter, the boy that Ginny told him would kill him in his future, as a temporally twisted sort of revenge. Ginny finally stopped trusting her diary and threw it away, to consequently be found by Harry. These events worked excellently for Riddle, but not at all for Malfoy; this culminated with Riddle putting Malfoy's whole plan at stake in forcing Ginny into the Chamber in hopes of Harry trying to rescue her. However this resulted with Harry not only rescuing Ginny but also destroying the fragment of Voldemort's soul contained in the horcrux, by stabbing the diary with one of the Basilisk's poisoned fangs. As Harry actually was the one to survive the showdown in the Chamber (with indirect help from Dumbledore through his pet phoenix, Fawkes), he was able to discover the truth behind Ginny "attacking" the school students, both proving her innocence and pointing an accusing finger at the true culprit, Malfoy, who was consequently sacked as a school governor. Adding insult to injury, Harry also managed to trick Malfoy into setting Dobby free with a sock. In a reaction to this trick, Malfoy attempted to physically attack Harry, but was thrown backward down some stairs by Dobby using his house-elf magic. After getting up from the landing Lucius was pulled out his wand, but did nothing because of his fear of what Dobby would do.
