Movies - Marnie

Marnie is a 1964 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock based on a novel by Winston Graham. The movie was not really successful in movie theatres compare to other Hitchcock's successes. It is considered the most psychologically-oriented film directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

The book and film are substantially different. The book is narrated by Marnie herself, a young con-woman with a dark secret in her past. At the end of the story, it is not clear whether she will be able to shake off her psychological problems and embrace normal life.

The film starred Tippi Hedren
and Sean Connery
. Hedren plays the title character, Marnie, a woman who has an unnatural fear and hatred of men. Connery plays Mark Rutland, a young widower who owns a large printing company. Marnie, who is hired at Rutland's business, finds an opportunity to steal money from the company's safe. Rutland manages to locate Marnie and blackmails her into marrying him instead informing the police. Then he attempts to discover and resolve the reasons for Marnie's behavior. At the end, Marnie and Mark uncover that her mother was a prostitute and that when Marnie was a young child she killed one of her mother's clients (a sailor played by Bruce Dern
).

Diane Baker
, Bruce Dern
, Martin Gabel
, Mariette Hartley
and Alan Napier
also appeared in the movie. Future soap opera actress Melody Thomas
played the uncredited role of young Marnie, who is seen in flashbacks.
