Martin Riggs (born 1950) is a ficitonal police officer from the Lethal Weapon franchise. He is played in all four films by Mel Gibson. Commonly refered by his last name by his friends and fellow officers, Riggs during the first Lethal Weapon movie was suicidal due to the recent death of his wife Victoria Lynn. Riggs and fellow officer Roger Murtaugh became partners (at first very reluctantly) and after a rough start, the two become good friends - despite the fact that Riggs always gets on Roger's nerves. Initially an eccentric but later more just sardonic, Riggs eventually falls in love with officer Lorna Cole (played by Rene Russo) and they have a child (out of wedlock) at the end of the fourth film. Both Riggs and Murtaugh are promoted to Captain by the fourth film in order to keep them out of trouble, but by the end of the movie their status is returned back to Sergeant.
