| The Master is a fictional character who appeared in the 1966 movie Manos: The Hands of Fate. He was played by Tom Neyman. The Master was the undead leader of a cult that worshipped the god Manos. He had a number of wives, and a dog. The Master wore black, flowing robes that had two large, red outstreched hands on the front. Also visible was the zipper on The Master's costume, his blue jeans underneath, and his sandals. The wives all wore white translucent gowns. Because the movie was a failure, the movie and The Master character were largely forgotten until the movie was featured in an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. The film attained a cult status of sorts following the film, as did several of the characters in the film. PlotIn the movie Manos: the Hands of Fate a family - the father Michael (Hal Warren), the mother Maggie (Diane Mahree), the daughter Debbie (Jackey Neyman Jones), and their poodle Peppy - get lost on the way to their vacation. Eventually the family happens upon The Master's lodge, and meet The Master's assistant Torgo. Despite Maggie's serious misgivings about the place, and Torgo's insistence that The Master would not approve, the family spends the night at the lodge. When the family enters the living room, they come across a painting of The Master, and his devilish dog. Maggie remarks that the dog is the most vicious looking animal she has ever seen. Mike says that he wouldn't want to run into The Master in the night, or even the day for that matter. The painting was actually a self-portrait. In addition to playing The Master, Tom Neyman also handled artistic duties, which included creating the painting. The Master's dog was actually the Neyman family dog. When the family hears The Master's dog, Peppy runs outside to investigate. Peppy gets into a fight with the other dog, and dies. Frightened, the family decides to leave right away. But the car won't start, so they are forced to spend the night. Debbie runs away for a few minutes, eventually coming across The Master and his dog. After finding her way back to the lodge, she leads her parents out to the place which we later learn is called the tomb. This is where The Master, his wives, and the dog are all resting. Right after the family heads back to the lodge, Torgo appears. He fondles the wives, and tells the Master that with the arrival of Maggie he has his own wife, and that The Master can't have her. The Master wakes up after Torgo leaves. After praying to Manos, The Master orders his wives to wake up. The Master then decides to kill Torgo for bringing the family to the lodge and fondling his wives, and to also kill his first wife for rebelling against him. The Master leaves to find Torgo. The wives get into an argument, and eventually wind up fighting each other. Many have speculated that this was Hal Warren's personal fantasy, to see women wrestling in this fashion. Meanwhile, Torgo is sleeping in his room at the lodge. The Master wakes Torgo, and tells him that Torgo had failed the cult, and that he must die. The Master puts Torgo in a trance of some sort. He then turns around, streches out his hands, and begins laughing. Torgo is brought back to the tomb. The Master breaks up the fight, and has his first wife tied up to a stake. He then orders his wives to kill Torgo. What follows is a strange sequence of what one El Paso reviewer likened to "Torgo being massaged to death." After they were done with Torgo, the Master took Torgo's hand, and placed it into the fire. This causes Torgo's hand to burn off, and Torgo runs away into the desert. Then he sacrifices his first wife and she promises that God would destroy him. In the original version, The Master is seen beating his first wife. That sequence was cut from the MST3K version of the film. The Master then leaves to search for the family. He encounters them in the lodge. After Michael shoots his gun at him, The Master just looks at him. The movie then shifts to a car carrying two women arriving at the lodge. They are greeted by Michael, who has taken Torgo's place. Michael tells the women that he, "...takes care of the place while The Master is away." The tomb is again shown, and the audience sees that Maggie is now one of The Master's wives. Also the daughter Debbie, in what was a disturbing development to many fans, is also at the tomb. She is also dressed in a gown and is one of The Master's wives. The Master role would be Tom Neyman's only movie role. Neyman would later move with his daughter to California. He eventually moved to the Pacific Northwest.
