Movies - Mikhail Vartanov

Mikhail Vartanov (Vardanov) was born in Grozny in 1937 to Armenian parents and was the 20th century's first Chechnya-born film maker. Vardanov became Chechnya's youngest professional photographer and its first graduate of the world's oldest and legendary film school, VGIK in Moscow. In 1973, Vardanov was named the Cinematographer of the Year at the Sixth Annual USSR Film Festival. The honor was preceded by noted documentary pictures "Monologue of the Mask" (1966), "Color of Armenian Soil" (1969), "Autumn Pastoral" (1971), which he directed, and followed by his exquisite cinematography work in Artavazd Pelechian's black and white "Seasons" (1975) and celebrated comedy "The Mulberry Tree" (1979). His career in the 1970s - 1980s was marked by blacklists and harassment for his friendship with the genius Sergei Parajanov
(Paradjanov) but Vardanov's prominent essays on art and cinema were published worldwide, notably in Cahiers Du Cinema. Vardanov's superb black and white, anti-KGB, "Erased Faces" (1987) and "Minas: A Requiem" (1989) were followed by his influential masterpiece "Parajanov: The Last Spring" (1992) which won the prestigious Russian Academy Award, the country's highest (Oscar equivalent) honor and screened to standing ovations of tearful audiences worldwide garnering the praise of the critics, celebrities and top awards in San Francisco and Beverly Hills. Vardanov disappeared in Hollywood where he reportedly creates experimental cinematography and photography along with collages and drawings.
