In the terminology of daikaiju eiga the Millennium Era (Mireniamu Era, romaji for the Japanese approximation to "Millennium") refers not to the third millennium but to all daikaiju eiga made since 1999, beginning Toho's Godzilla 2000: Millennium
) and most recently including Godzilla: Final Wars
, supposedly the last in the Godzilla series, or at least the beginning of a ten-to-fifteen year hiatus. It closely follows the Heisei era, which ended with Daiei's Gamera 3: Awakening of Irys
earlier in 1999.

Within the Godzilla film franchise the Shinsei (or, to western fans, Millennium) Series falls within this era. Unlike the VS Series and, to a lesser extent, the Shōwa Series, the Godzilla films of this series do not fall within a single timeline. Godzilla: Tokyo SOS
is a direct sequel to Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
, but otherwise the films are disjoint from each other and include only Shōwa era daikaiju eiga in their individual chronologies, often only the original 1954 Godzilla
; not all Mireniamu era movies even acknowledge the full course of events of that movie.
