Movies - Model Shop

Model Shop was a 1968 film by Jacques Demy, starring Gary Lockwood
and Anouk Aimee. It was his only English-language film, following the international success of The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg
.

The soundtrack for the film was recorded by the legendary Los Angeles group Spirit, in between their second (The Family That Plays Together) and third (Clear) albums. Apparently, Demy wanted a band that captured the vibe of Los Angeles as he saw it, and after hearing Spirit in a club, he decided that they were the perfect group. The soundtrack differs from most of their work in that it is almost exclusively instrumental, with only one vocal track (Now Or Anywhere) and another track with an extremely brief lead vocal (Green Gorilla). In many ways, it is a precursor to their third album, Clear, and one of the songs from the soundtrack would find its way onto that album.

In 2005, most of the soundtrack was released through Sundazed Records under the film's title. Though it has been asserted that the soundtrack might have been considered for release, there is no real evidence to prove this. The film itself, however, has not been released in any format since the original theatrical run.

While the song referred to in the track listing as Model Shop II (Clear) would be the only track formally released on a Spirit album, several of the tracks would be released on the Time Circle compilation, as well as appearing as bonus tracks on the 1996 reissues of The Family That Plays Together and Clear. Some of the tracks, however, are present in alternate performances, a few of which differ significantly from previously-released versions. Differences are noted in the track listing.
