Plot

Murli Prasad Sharma (Sanjay Dutt), a Mumbai small-time gangster known as Munna Bhai, is generally a happy man; except during his beloved parents' annual visits to Mumbai. They wanted him to be a doctor and he doesn't want to disappoint them ... so, whenever his parents visit, he turns his gangster pad into the fake Sri Hari Prasad Sharma Charitable Hospital and pretends to be a medical doctor.

One year Munna's plan goes awry. His father meets an old acquaintance, Dr. Asthana (Boman Irani) and the two older men decide to marry Munna to Dr. Asthana's daughter, Dr. Suman (Gracy Singh). The truth comes out and Munna's parents are heartbroken.

Munna Bhai decides that there is only one way to redeem himself -- he has to become a REAL doctor. He uses all his gangster skills and muscle to gain admission to the Imperial Institute of Medical Sciences, where he runs head-on into Dr. Asthana, who just happens to be the dean of the medical school.

Does Munna become a real doctor? Will he make a match with Dr. Suman? Can he make his parents proud of him? All is answered, if not quite in the ways one might expect.
