| Nueve reinas (international, English title: Nine Queens), is a 2000 Argentine film directed by Fabián Bielinsky and starring Gastón Pauls, Ricardo Darín, Leticia Brédice and Tomás Fonzi. It tells the story of two con artists who meet off by chance and decide to cooperate in a scam. The film was nominated for 28 awards and won 21 of them. This film was the basis for the 2004 American remake Criminal, directed by Gregory Jacobs and starring John C. Reilly and Diego Luna. Plot summaryTwo con men, Marcos and Juan meet, apparently offchance, in a gas station mini-market, early in the morning. Juan attempts to scam the mini-market cashier, but makes the mistake when he comes back to pull the same scam on the next shift, too. Marcos, who has been observing this the whole time, steps in pretending to be a policeman, and takes Juan away. As soon as they are far enough from the shop, Marcos tells Juan he is not a cop but a fellow con-man. Juan asks Marcos to show him the ropes, because, Juan tells us, his father was a con-man, too, but he got locked up in jail for trying to swindle somebody. Juan tells Marcos that he needs the money, because there is a certain judge that accepts bribes and if the money is right, his dad can be released with in 6 months, instead of serving 10 years. After a bit of deliberation, Marcos reveals to Juan he has another game in mind, with much higher stakes and he asks Juan to be his partner in crime: the sale of some rare forged stamps, called the "The Nine Queens", to a rich Spaniard, who is trying to flee the country but is unable to take money out of the country with him, though he can take things that look like they have no financial value. The plot thickens when Marco's sister and Marco's younger brother, a slew of thieves, con-men and pickpockets, old friends of Juan's father get involved, the bank of Argentina goes bankrupt and the real copies of "The Nine Queens" turn up.
