Movies - Odd Man Out

Odd Man Out (1947) is a classic British film noir starring James Mason
as Johnny MacQueen, an IRA chieftain trying to escape from the police after an ill-advised bank robbery meant to replenish Republican coffers. The film follows the wounded MacQueen through an increasingly surreal odyssey of a day and a night, one gradually revealing what might be called the true star of the film: the bleak city of 1940s Belfast, with its labyrinth of havens and traps drawing Johnny deeper into itself as the night wears on.

Carol Reed, the celebrated director, was able to call upon the striking work of the cinematographer Robert Krasker, and also had the advantage of a superb William Alwyn film score. Odd Man Out was written by F.L. Green and R.C. Sherriff from Green's novel. The supporting cast features the memorable Kathleen Ryan in her only feature film, along with Robert Newton as a drunken artist and Denis O'Dea, F.J. McCormick, and William Hartnell in other crucial roles.
