* Olly olly oxen free is a children's saying, which generally is used to indicate that people who are hiding (in a game of hide-and-seek, for example) can safely come out into the open. The exact origin of the phrase is unknown, but etymologists suspect it is a childish corruption of a phrase that would have made more sense in the Hide-and-seek context; such as "all in free", "out’s in free", or "All ye all ye outs in free"; or possibly a corruption of the German "Alle, alle auch sind frei", (literally, "Everyone, everyone also is free"). Interestingly enough, an oxen is the plural name for a species of cow, so the meaning might be something like, "All cows are free!"

"Olly Olly Oxen Free" was also a 1978 made-for-television children's movie starring Katharine Hepburn
, Kevin McKenzie and Dennis Dimster. It was written by Eugenie Polie and directed by Richard A. Colla.

:Hepburn, who plays a junk dealer, befriends two young boys who want to celebrate their late grandfather's birthday by taking a hot air balloon ride. Hepburn helps them realize their wishes and ends up being swept up in the adventure in the process, sailing over California's Napa Valley in a hot air balloon.

This saying was alluded to in Bad Religion's song Stranger Than Fiction, on their album with the same name.
