Movies - Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior

Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior (องค์บาก) (2003) is a Thai
action film. It was directed by Prachya Pinkaew
and starred Tony Jaa
. Ong-Bak proved to be Jaa's breakout film. The title refers to name of the Buddha image.

Featuring amazing chase sequences and bouts of intense, but gracefully choreographed violence, as well as Jaa's own acrobatic agility and fighting prowess, Ong-Bak became most notable for eschewing CGI and wires in favour of physical stunts for its outrageous action sequences (however, a crane was used to lift a tuk-tuk during one sequence). Indeed, much of the film's international advertising boasted of the fact.

The film also introduced international audiences to a traditional form of Muay Thai (or Muay Boran: ancient muay thai style), a Thai kickboxing style which is known for violent strikes with fist, feet, shins, elbows and knees. The fights were choreographed by Panna Ritikrai, who is also Tony Jaa's mentor and a well-known stunt director in Thailand.

After the release of the film, many came to believe that Jaa will become the next phenomenon in martial arts films. He later followed up Ong-Bak with the 2005 actioner Tom-Yum-Goong
and a brief appearance in the action-comedy The Bodyguard
.

Plot synopsis

In a peaceful village in northern Thailand, there is a temple with a great Buddha sculpture named "Ong-Bak." After a criminal steals the sculpture's head, Ting (Tony Jaa), a young man from the village, is sent to Bangkok to retrieve the sculpture's head.

Trivia

  • In one of the fighting scenes you can see writing on a garage door that reads "Hi Spielberg
    , let do it together".
  • Tony Jaa has been learning Muay Thai for almost 5-10 years to get the role.
