"Our Day Out" is a film about deprived children from Liverpool. All of these children (excluding 'Digga' and 'Reilly' who are older than the rest of the children) are in something called the 'Progress Class' which is run by Mrs. Kay, where students go if they are illiterate. Mrs. Kay, and her helpers, Susan and Colin, are all very kindly, but have little hope for the children. Another character, Mr. Briggs (whose job is never specified), is a stark contrast to Mrs. Kay, thinking that the children are spoilt and that they don't work hard enough. The play centers around when Mrs. Kay is allowed to take the Progress Class out for a day. Although originally they intend to go to Conway Castle, they end up also going to the zoo, beach and fairground. At first the play seems rather predictable, but by the end it becomes quite dark and unexpected.
