| Panic in the Streets is a black and white, 96-minute film released by 20th Century Fox in 1950. It is film noir action movie shot on location in New Orleans. Elia Kazan directed this story of a naval medical officer (Richard Widmark) and a police detective (Paul Douglas) who have only a few hours in which to capture some fleeing felons who may be infected with the pneumonic plague. Barbara Bel Geddes co-stars. The bad guys are played by Jack Palance (credited as Walter Jack Palance in his film debut) and Zero Mostel. (Kazan later testified against Mostel in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities.) This film won an Academy award for Writing (Motion Picture Story) in 1950. The script (adapted by writer Daniel Fuchs) was based on stories by Edna Anhalt and Edward Anhalt. Cast
