Plot

Set in the stylish and glittering eastern Indian city of Kolkata in 1962, the story of Parineeta is a love triangle involving the three main characters - Girish (Sanjay Dutt

) and Lolita (Vidya Balan
). Orphaned early in life, Lolita is a dignified young lady and a childhood friend of Shekhar, the rich boy next door. Their close friendship masks the love they possess for each other and only surfaces when a London returned bachelor, Girish, falls in love with Lolita. When Navin Rai, Shekhar's scheming businessman father, prepares to acquire Lolita's ancestral mansion in order to recover debts from her uncle, relationships get strained. The ensuing help from Girish, who bails Lolita's family out, drives in the last nail, leaving behind a furious Naveen Rai and a jealous Shekhar. Soon, Girish proposes to marry Lolita and the wedding arrangements begin, while a seemingly cast aside Shekhar agrees on marriage to the rich Gayatri Tantia (Dia Mirza
). Girish however meets Shekhar before his wedding to Gayatri and it is revealed that he did not marry Lolita, but Lolita's friend Koel (Raima Sen
) - Lolita herself considers herself already married to Shekhar. Realizing that he has become like is father, Shekhar furiously tears down the wall his father has built between his house and Lolita's.
