Pepin is a village located in Pepin County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 878. The village is located within the Town of Pepin. The author Laura Ingalls Wilder
was born in the Pepin area, where her family lived. The village celebrates this every September with traditional music, craft demonstrations, a "Laura look-alike" contest, a spelling bee, and other events.

Geography

Pepin is located at 44°26'33" North, 92°8'52" West (44.442724, -92.147884).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 878 people, 381 households, and 241 families residing in the village. The population density was 477.5/km² (1,238.1/mi²). There were 430 housing units at an average density of 233.8/km² (606.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.29% White, 0.11% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 381 households out of which 22.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% were married couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families. 32.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.74.

In the village the population was spread out with 17.3% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 21.9% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 28.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48 years. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $36,319, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,393 versus $22,875 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,755. 5.8% of the population and 2.0% of families were below the poverty line. 7.5% of those under the age of 18 and 11.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
