| Phantasm is a low-budget cult classic horror movie filmed, copyrighted, and released in 1977, as the copyright date at the end of the film reads: MCMLXXVII. It was directed, written, photographed, co-produced and edited by Don Coscarelli. It introduced The Tall Man (who was portrayed in the film and its sequels by Angus Scrimm), a supernatural and sadistic undertaker who turns the dead into midget zombies to do his bidding and take over the world. The Tall Man uses flying silver balls (referred to as Sentinel Spheres by fans) that contain a lethal pair of spiked blades and a drill that eviscerates the victim's brain. Later on in the series, the Sentinel Spheres receive several attachments, including a master gold ball. This movie was number 25 on the cable channel Bravo's list of the "100 Scariest Movie Moments". It was followed by several sequels:
There was also talks of a Phantasm V (also known as Phantasm's End, which was to be written by Roger Avery. Unfortunately, the plan was axed. There are rumours speculating that Phantasm is going to be remade in a trilogy. Unfortunatly those rumours were put to rest. Don Coscarelli is the man horror genre fans want to keep up with. He’s got not one, not two, but three cult successes under his belt, with fans waiting anxiously for additional chapters to come whenever Coscarelli gets the itch (and the funding) to make more. Well, Icons of Fright caught up with Coscarelli at the NYC Horror Film Festival and got word on two of those franchises. First of all, Coscarelli put to rest the rumors of a new Phantasm trilogy. While the possibility of more "Tall Man" did at one point exist, word got out before the deal was finalized. For reasons unknown, the deal is now off, so no more silver spheres to haunt fans for now.'' There was also a box set of the Phantasm movies released. It was released exclusivly in the UK under Region II DVD's. The case was a Sphere, and it contained a fifth DVD, which had many, many extras.
