Movies - Poochakkoru Mookkuthi

Poochakkoru Mookkuthi (translation: A Nose-Ring for the Pussy Cat) is a cult screwball Malayalam film
starring Nedumudi Venu
, Sukumari, Mohanlal
, Shankar, Menaka, Soman, Jagathi Sreekumar, Kuthiravattam Pappu, and Srinivasan.

The film, released in 1984, was the debut of noted Indian director Priyadarshan. The assistant director was Sibi Malayil, who went on to become a major director in his own right.

Poochakkoru Mookkuthi marked the first time the great Indian actor Mohanlal
was directed by Priyadarshan. Priyadarshan was Mohanlal's friend and senior in college in Thiruvananthapuram. The film started a long association between the actor and director, which resulted in a number of now-classic comedies in Malayalam, including Kilukkam, Chitram, Vellaanakalude Naadu and Thenmavin Kombathu.

In 2003, Priyadarshan remade the film in Hindi, as Hungama, starring Paresh Rawal
, Akshaye Khanna, et al.

Importance in Malayalam Cinema

Poochakkoru Mookkuthi provided the template for a number of screwball comedies that flooded the Malayalam film industry in the mid-eighties, many of them directed by Priyadarshan. These include Boeing Boeing, Aram + Aram = Kinnaram, Mazha Peyyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu, and Odaruthammava Aalariyaam.

These comedies marked the entry of directors/screenwriters like Sathyan Anthikkad, Srinivasan and Priyadarshan, whose styles later matured into more sophisticated comedies. They also signaled the end of the long reign of the Bhasi-Bahadur pair in Malayalam comedy, and established the comic triumvirate of Pappu, Maala, and Jagathi.

M.G. Sreekumar, who was most prolific Malayalam singer of the 1990s, made his debut singing the title song of this movie.
