Movies - Popular Science

Popular Science is an American monthly magazine founded in 1872 carrying articles for the general reader on science and technology subjects. Published by Time Inc., it is especially well known for its What's New section, which highlights several recent advances in technology each month. Since March 2004, it also contains the highly-praised "How 2.0," which allows the average American to, for example, melt tungsten or customize PDAs. As of March 2006, it has a newstand price of $3.99 in the US and $4.99 in Canada. The subscription cost per issue is between $0.91 and $1.33.

In the 1930s and 1940s, Paramount Pictures produced a short subject series under the Popular Science name based upon the style and tone of the magazine. The shorts, all one-reel (ten minutes) in length, were shot exclusively in Cinecolor for many years.

Popular Science has been criticized for wildly overestimating the availability or practicality of scientific advances, sometimes taking the claims of a technology's advocates at face value without criticism.

"The Popular Science Effect" is a colloquialism for something that is widely publicised, but isn't released for many years or is a complete flop in the market.
