Porco Rosso - (紅の豚; Kurenai no Buta, meaning "The Crimson Pig."), is a 1992 anime film by Hayao Miyazaki about an Italian World War I fighter ace, now living as a freelance bounty hunter chasing "air pirates" in the Adriatic Sea. The man has been cursed, and has the head of a pig. Once called Marco Paggot, he is now known to the world as "Porco Rosso", Italian for "Red Pig."PlotThe film tells the story of Porco's romance with Gina, who runs a pilots' club and hotel in the Adriatic; his friendship with a young girl named Fio who is a talented airplane engineer; and his rivalry with a hotshot American pilot named Curtis. The origin and nature of Porco's curse is never fully explained, although the question does arise in the movie. In the beginning, we see Porco in his pilotsuit, resting on a sand beach surrounded by cliffs during the day. After he finishes bargaining for the price of his service over telephone, he leisurely takes off in his red sea plane from his base on beach of a tiny island. He makes living as a bounty hunter, guards ships from pirates with planes, and he flys the sky of Adriatic sea with pairless piloting skill. Though in rivalry with pirates, they and he are also in a degree of coexistence, and he avoids human casualties. In leisure time, he and other pilots would go to Gina's "Hotel Adrino" at night. Porco and Gina have known each other for a long time; on a wall of the club there is a picture of young Gina, Porco in his human form, and three of his comrades on an plane named "Adrina". It is the only remaining picture of Porco's human face, and even this picture is defaced. Porco used to be an Ace for the Italian Air Force in WW I, but he doesn't want to be in the service any more. One day, when Porco is on his way to Milan to repair his sea plane, he is attacked by the American hotshot pilot Curtis, who is hired by pirates and is eager to shoot down Porco to make his name. Porco's plane crashes. Curtis believes Porco to be dead, but Porco is in fact hiding on an island. Porco finishes his journey to Milan and has his plane repaired by an aircraft company named "Piccolo". Piccolo is owned by an old mechanic. Because of the Great Depression, all men leave homes for works, the company enlists the aid of Fio, granddaughter of the owner, along with a work force entirely consists of female relatives. The plane is fixed with expensive unpaid bills, and Fio decides to accompany Porco on his return flight. On leaving they are chased by the Italian secret police and the Italy air force, but with the help of Porco's friend Ferrarin they are able to escape. Meanwhile in the private garden of Gina's club, Curtis proposes to Gina, and promises to take her to Hollywood and later to White House. Gina laughes and refuses (later telling him "life here is more complicated than in USA"). When asked whom she has been waiting for, Gina says she has betted Porco would come into her garden during the day, and she would leave with him. Just then Porco's plane appears and circles Gina's garden in the sky. But Porco does not land or come into the garden, however, thus Gina's bet is lost. Upon landing at his secret place on the island, Porco discovers that it is not so secret any more, and is accosted by pirates pilots. Fio talks them out of killing Porco or destroying the plane, and her praises to seaplane pilots won popularity among all mid-aged male pilots. Curtis has also followed them there to challenge Porco again. Curtis and pirates leaves with the agreement that Curtis will duel Porco, with the bet being for Curtis to pay off Fio's debt, or for her to marry him if Porco loses. In the night Fio asks Porco to tell her a bedtime story. Porco tells a strange story happened during his years in air force, about an air attack in which he loses his comrades and Gina loses her first new husband. The next day, Porco and Curtis then have an duel of dog fight, which receives high attention from parties of pirates, gangsters, smugglers, spies, police in disguise and other ordinary people. The duel was publicly hosted by parties of pirates, who turned it into a carnival and collect fat bets from the crowd of audiences. Porco does not kill Curtis when he has the opportunity. The fight eventually ends up as a fist fight in the water after the machinegun in Porco's plane jams and Curtis has run out of ammo. At the end of a seemingly endless fight they knock each other out. Gina arrived in her plane "Adrina" at the same time. Both Porco and Curtis are underwater and nobody seems to emerge, but suddenly Porco stands up, responding to just-arrived Gina's calling of not to "make another girl unhappy", and wins the fight. Gina also tells the crowd that Italian Air Force are about to arrive, and the duel ends with Fio's bill paid off, and everyone leaves in haste. Upon parting from Porco, Fio gave him an unexpected kiss, and Curtis then notices that Porco is trying to cover a change happening to his pig head. The film ends with narration by Fio over the years after. Fio inherits the Piccolo company. Curtis becomes a Hollywood star. Other pilots grow old and still visit Gina's club, while a final secret is not revealed at the end.
