SpongeBob and Patrick are going to a prank store, but they can't seem to find a good prank. Eventually the duo finds a can of Invisible Spray, "the perfect prank". But it stains clothes. SpongeBob thinks they should spray a park bench, and then sit on it to trick the public into thinking they're sitting on nothing. Patrick agrees, and reminds SpongeBob that the spray stains clothes so they'll have to do the prank naked. They take their clothes off. They then get in a fight about who is going to use the spray and use up all the spray on themsleves. They are now totally invsible and the Spray can is empty.

They decide instead of spraying the bench prank, they scare people and make them believe they (SpongeBob and Patrick) are ghosts. They scare Mrs. Puff, Sandy, Squidward and just about everyone else in Bikini Bottom, except Mr. Krabs whom they decide to do last. But even though Mr. Krabs claims not to be scared of ghosts, they prank him anyway. That night, at the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs is ready for the "ghosts." They come in and scare Mr. Krabs silly, and they do things that will prevent him from escaping. They chase him into the bathroom, and threaten to burn his dollar. Mr. Krabs stops them with water, and the water also washes off the spray which reveals them to be SpongeBob and Patrick.

Mr. Krabs says not to worry, he pranked as a kid too; and then asks the duo why they are naked. The spray stains clothes, SpongeBob replies (even though we saw their clothes get sprayed in the beginning of the episode). They start to head home, but they end up at one of the Krusty Krab Shows as "The Nude Pranksters." All of Bikini Bottom is watching, including everyone they scared!

Trivia

In this episode, Sandy Cheeks goes in an escape pod to Texas. It is a common misconception that she may never return for future episodes, but she appears again in the end of this episode, at the Krusty Krab.
The newspaper article is a paragraph made out of gibberish repeated over and over again.

"SpongeBob Meets the Strangler" and "Pranks a Lot" premiered together as a double direct-to-video episode. They have become the eighth and ninth direct-to-video episodes before they aired together on Monday, October 11, 2004.
Mr. Krabs' line "I ain't afraid of no ghosts" is a reference to one of the lyrics to the "Ghostbusters
" song.
This isn't really the Season 3 finale of SpongeBob SquarePants, due to its direct-to-video release, the Season 3 finale was really "The Camping Episode". However, "Pranks a Lot" was the official Season 3 finale of SpongeBob SquarePants, due to its TV premiere.
