Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice (1813) has been the subject of numerous television and film adaptations. This independent film, made in 2003 and titled Pride and Prejudice: A Latter-Day Comedy, is set in modern-day Provo, Utah, apparently at Brigham Young University. The characters all appear to be Latter-day Saints, though this is never explicitly stated. The film received largely positive reviews outside Mormon enclaves such as Utah; still, some of the humor and plot devices derive from and require an understanding of Mormon social and religious mores.Religion in the filmThe film is set in a Mormon/Latter-Day Saint (LDS) community. This move was made by the creators of this modern take on Pride and Prejudice because many LDS ideals line up with many of the ideals from Jane Austen's time. Many have disagreed as to how far the religious content stretches: with some it has been an issue; however, the majority of people (Both LDS and not) claim that the religion is extremely downplayed and not dwelled on. It has been agreed by nearly everyone, however, that it is one of the least actively religious films of the LDS genre. Apparently the production studio that put out the film thought it was too religious when it was out in theatres. After the film left theatres, it was modified and several of the more 'overt' references were removed (such as changing 'Sister Bennet' to 'Miss Bennet') to give the movie more mainstream appeal. However, if one wishes to view the unmodified version with all the LDS humor intact and owns the DVD, they can view the theatrical release by going to the second page of the Scene Selection and then, from the words "Main Menu," hitting down three times. This is supposed to highlight a CTR ring. Hit enter and it will play the uncut theatrical version of the film. Cast and crew
