Puppetoons, also called replacement animation, differs from traditional stop-motion. Mostly known from the shorts of George Pal. While the objects in stop-motion are moved one frame at the time, the objects in replacement animation can not be moved at all. Instead there are many individual figures, each representing a frame on their own. To make such a character to walk, many separate figures are made. When there is enough of them to make a single step, the same figures are used over and over again in a cycle, which creates the illusion of them walking. When the character stops walking and starts doing something else, new figures must be made. This means a second of animation, which is made up of 24 frames, requires 24 different figures of the same character. It is the same principle as in traditional cel animation, where drawn figures are used instead of real three dimensional objects.
