Puss Gets the Boot is a one-reel animated cartoon short subject, produced in Technicolor and released to theatres on February 10 1940 by Metro-Goldwyn Mayer. It was produced by Rudolph Ising and directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, with musical supervision by Scott Bradley. The short is notable for featuring the first appearances of the characters who would later be christened Tom and Jerry, who would go on to appear in over 110 more short cartoons, seven of which won the Academy Award for Best Short Subject: Cartoons.

In Puss Gets the Boot, the cat (here named "Jasper") has received an ultimatum from his mistress, a Black maid: if he breaks one more thing, he is to be thrown out of the house. The mouse (here called "Jinx", but not recognized onscreen as such) uses this to his advantage, and attempts to break the fine china, wine glasses, plates, and other fragile items he can find. Eventually, Jinx's plans come to fruition, Jasper is thrown out of the house, and the triumphant mouse decorates his mousehole with a sign that reads "home sweet home".
